Catholic Parish Outreach fights hunger

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, Catholic Parish Outreach (CPO) is experiencing its busiest time of the year. On Monday, November 24, the food pantry served 262 families; and 280 families were served on Tuesday, November 25. Bishop Michael F. Burbidge joined CPO volunteers on Tuesday as they distributed food to clients. He prayed with volunteers before food distribution began and thanked them for their faithful service. Support Circle Program for Homeless Families Announces Staff Changes

Catholic Charities is excited to announce that Sharon Mitchell will begin work as the new Director of the Support Circle Program for Homeless Families on December 1, 2014.  Ms. Mitchell comes to Catholic Charities after serving for the past six years as the Director of Programs and Case Management for the Culinary Job Training Program at the Interfaith Food Shuttle. New Office Opens in Durham

On November 19, the Piedmont office opened at a new location after 15 years of serving clients at Broad Street in downtown Durham. Bishop Michael F. Burbidge blessed the new facility at 3711 University Drive in Durham. “We needed to move because we needed more space and a space that would serve the community in a more professional manner,” explained Piedmont Regional Director Lisa Perkins. Catholic Campaign for Human Development awards more than $1OO,OOO in grants

Catholic Charities held its 2014 Community Partners Recognition Dinner on Thursday, October 30 at Saint Michael’s Parish Center in Cary. Cathy Penny, a member of the Catholic Charities board of directors, welcomed guests, and Fr. Douglas Reed, pastor of Saint Michael, said the opening prayer. The event included distribution of grants from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD.) Two national grant winners, Durham Economic Resource Center and Orange County Justice United, received grants of $50,000 and $35,000, respectively. George Quigley receives Bishop F. Joseph Gossman Community Leadership and Service Award

On Thursday, October 30th Bishop Michael F. Burbidge presented the Bishop F. Joseph Gossman Community Leadership and Service Award to Mr. George Quigley of Saint Ann in Fayetteville. The award was presented during the 2014 Annual Community Partners Recognition Dinner at the Saint Michael Parish Center in Cary. Mr. Quigley, who is a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, received the award for his work giving back to the community as a volunteer. Alice Sontag honored with John J. Carey Award

On Thursday, October 30, Catholic Charities honored Alice Sontag with the 2014 John J. Carey Award for Outstanding Contribution to Charity and Social Outreach Ministry. A retired teacher, Ms. Sontag is a member of Saint Peter the Fisherman Mission in Oriental.
