On Friday, July 29th, Catholic Charities will be hosting a “Cans for Charity” game with the Carolina Mudcats. Fans who donate three cans of food at the game will receive a $3 discount on the $10 box seat special. Cans that are collected at the game will be distributed among three food pantries which serve the surrounding area: Catholic Parish Outreach in Raleigh, the Catholic Charities Food Pantry in Greenville, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in Goldsboro.
Gary Skinner, Catholic Charities Executive Director, elaborated on the importance of having a food drive like this over the summer, “Many families benefit from meals provided by the school system. During the summer, these children do not receive those meals, so we see an increase in demand on our food pantries.”
As part of the event, special guests of Catholic Charities will be on hand to sing the National Anthem and throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Fans will also be treated to fireworks after the game.
The evening is the 2nd game in a two-part “Pitch in for Charity” summer baseball series. The first game was held on June 20th with the Durham Bulls and saw nearly 500 people in attendance. Mr. Skinner commented on the success of the first game, “We were really encouraged by the turnout at the Bulls game. The community came out in a strong way to support our work, which helps their neighbors every day.”
Catholic Charities works to meet the needs of those most vulnerable in our community, especially those facing hunger, poverty and homelessness. Last year, over 64,000 people throughout Eastern North Carolina were assisted by Catholic Charities.
