Cape Fear Region Provides Clean Laundry for All

Every day in Wilmington, people wake up carrying the weight of homelessness, an experience defined not only by the absence of shelter, but by the constant struggle to maintain dignity. According to the most recent point of data count, the Cape Fear Continuum of Care estimates that 506 individuals experience homelessness in Wilmington, with 53% being unsheltered (CoC – Homeless Data | Cape Fear Council of Governments). The Catholic Charities Cape Fear Regional Office, all too aware of the need within their community, decided to think outside the box to provide dignified support for their local unhoused population. On August 15th, 2025, Cape Fear launched their Clean Start laundry trailer, and as of January 2026, they have completed nearly 400 loads of laundry.

Homelessness comes with countless challenges which may be invisible to much of our community. For instance, when everything you own must fit in a single bag, and your temporary living status is under threat, you may not have the luxury of multiple outfits. The clothes you wear every day inevitably get dirty, and without access to free public showers or laundry facilities, it becomes nearly impossible to stay clean. This can increase infection risks, reduce employment readiness, and further stigmatization of a population already on the margins.

All of this boils down to a lack of access, and compounding effects that follow. The visible signs of hardship that come from living outside often become the basis for prejudice, leaving people feeling unseen, unwelcome, or ‘less than’. The Clean Start Laundry Trailer was created to meet a pressing community need, as well as provide a safe space for neighbors to learn about support programs that may ease the burdens of poverty.

If the Clean Start Laundry Trailer were a train, the volunteers would be the coal keeping it running strong. The entire program is volunteer‑driven, and the 19 individuals who have completed training have committed to a unique experience, a blend of behind-the-scenes work and lots of face-to-face connection with our neighbors in need. When talking about the impact of Clean Start, volunteer Melinda shared that “Providing a simple service like washing someone’s clothes, has a much larger impact. It’s showing some compassion while providing a little dignity.”

The Clean Start mobile laundry trailer brings no‑cost laundry care directly to neighbors experiencing homelessness in downtown Wilmington, offering support with respect and compassion. Thanks to committed volunteers, the trailer can offer clean laundry with dignity and care, helping to interrupt some of the cycles perpetuated by homelessness. Neighbors can wash and dry their clothing and bedding, preserving items that bring them comfort, rather than throwing them away or watching them deteriorate. A simple load of laundry can lead to moments of being seen and potentially a lifesaving inference–it shows that even a small act of service can create meaningful change.
