A Grateful Farewell to Centro La Comunidad

Since its founding in 1998, Centro La Comunidad, a program of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh, has been a beacon of hope and support for the Spanish-speaking community in Alamance County. As Catholic Charities works to consolidate and strengthen its core services across Central and Eastern North Carolina, Centro La Comunidad will close on August 28, 2025. While this marks the end of a meaningful chapter, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary legacy Centro leaves behind.

Born from a vision shared by local leaders and residents, Centro was established to respond to the needs of a growing Latino population and to build bridges of understanding across cultures. For over 25 years, it has done just that, with compassion, dignity, and unwavering commitment.

As the only nonprofit in Alamance County exclusively focused on serving the Spanish-speaking community, Centro La Comunidad became a trusted and welcoming resource. From supporting new parents and offering language and literacy classes to providing DOJ accredited immigration legal services, Centro helped thousands of individuals and families overcome barriers and build better lives.

Centro also played a key role in shaping a more inclusive Alamance County. Whether consulting with local service providers to promote culturally competent care or collaborating with churches and law enforcement to implement the “Faith ID” program, Centro worked hand-in-hand with community partners to create a more just and compassionate society. Its longstanding partnerships with United Way of Alamance County, the Center for New North Carolinians, AmeriCorps ACCESS, and many other agencies reflect the deep impact and credibility of its work.

The decision to close Centro La Comunidad was not made lightly. Catholic Charities remains committed to serving the most vulnerable in our communities and must continually assess how to best allocate limited resources across Central and Eastern North Carolina. With changes in the community and within our agency, this transition will allow us to strengthen and expand core services, especially food pantry programming, across the Piedmont Region, where the need for access to nutritious food continues to grow.

Centro La Comunidad will officially close on August 28, 2025. Case management and employment services will conclude on June 30, 2025, and immigration legal services will end on August 28, 2025.

We are deeply grateful to the staff, volunteers, community partners, and, most importantly, the families who made Centro La Comunidad what it was: a place of belonging, compassion, and transformation. Though this chapter is coming to a close, the legacy of Centro will continue to inspire our work and our mission.
