We are excited to host this year’s Gala at Market Hall; a full-service wedding and event venue nestled in the heart of downtown Raleigh’s Moore Square District. The Historic venue is surrounded by the cobblestone streets and the shining lights of City Market. In 1914, Market Hall was purchased by Contractor Jesse G. Adams, who hired Architect James Matthew Kennedy to create a Spanish Mission style landmark to host the city’s first Farmers’ Market. It was the first integrated market that brought together shoppers from Historic Black Main Street (Hargett Street), city center, and surrounding counties.
For over 40 years afterward, farmers from Eastern North Carolina would come by truck or horse-drawn buggy to set up shop along the cobblestone streets under the eaves of the building. In the white building behind Market Hall there was a blacksmith shop and horse stables to repair wagon wheels and horseshoes. In the 60’s-late 80’s the venue was sold and repurposed as a furniture store, until it was turned into Greenshields Brewery in 1989, becoming one of the first 50 craft breweries in the United States. The property became a primarily event-oriented venue in 2009 and has been renovating for improvement ever since.
Right outside of their front door is the iconic Moore square–home to various restaurants, interactive water features, and large landscaped lawns that feature family-friendly activities and community events. Additionally, Market Hall is 7 Minute Walk to Three Major Hotels on Fayetteville Street & Downtown Raleigh City Center. Take a stroll under the oak trees, enjoy the atmosphere, and come together in November to keep this venues history flowing!
Now in its 12th year, the event has been renamed the Catholic Charities Gala of Hope to reflect the organization’s growth and evolution—reaching more communities with deeper, more comprehensive care. Since its inception in 2011, the Gala has raised over $2.3 million to support Catholic Charities in serving our neighbors in need. What began in the gymnasium of Cardinal Gibbons High School has grown to welcome more than 400 guests annually at venues such as the Downtown Raleigh Marriott and the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley. Catholic Charities has been honored to welcome distinguished speakers, including former Duke Football Coach David Cutcliffe and Dr. Carolyn Woo, former President and CEO of Catholic Relief Services. Your support of the Gala of Hope is critical as we continue to provide help and create hope for an increasing number of families.
