Fair Bluff Event Delivers Food and Hurricane Readiness

In the town of Fair Bluff, North Carolina, the 4th Friday of every month brings something a little special to the community. On those Fridays, the Catholic Charities Cape Fear Regional Office hosts one of their Mobile Food Pantries, providing much-needed groceries and household staples to local families. Fair Bluff has not had a grocery store since experiencing back-to-back impacts from Hurricane Matthew (2016) and Hurricane Florence (2018), making nutritional groceries hard to acquire.

However, on June 27, 2025, the residents of Fair Bluff received double the support with a food distribution and Disaster Preparedness Expo! Over 75 families attended this wonderful event, which was graciously supported by Food Lion, Lowe’s, and BlueCross BlueShield.

As part of the event, attendees paid close attention as Catholic Charities staff reviewed how to prepare your home for severe weather, including how to board up windows, key facts about tarping roofs, and the safe operation of generators. Participants also learned about best practices for maintaining food safety during power outages. Sharing these practical lessons is a critical part of preparedness, especially given the region’s vulnerability to hurricanes. This knowledge will equip families with valuable tools for the future.

This gathering exemplified the commitment of Catholic Charities to providing help and creating hope through collaborative, compassionate action. By combining vital nutritional support with hurricane-readiness training, Catholic Charities is helping create more resilient communities. A food pantry is more than just a place to fill empty plates. It’s a lifeline that fosters community, especially if and when a disaster strikes. As we continue in this hurricane season, initiatives like this event in Fair Bluff remind us that community strength grows when charity, preparation, and education come together.
